Gachibowli Indoor Stadium

 

The city of Hyderabad lacked proper sports facilities before the 2002 National games. Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium was the only stadium that catered little sporting facilities to the people of Hyderabad. But the city has seen a massive improvement in the sports infrastructure from 2002 onwards with stadiums such as Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium, Saroornagar Indoor Stadium along with Gachibowli Indoor Stadium. Located in the Gachibowli suburb of Hyderabad, with a seating capacity of 5000, Gachibowli Indoor Stadium is an added feather to the City of Nizams. The stadium is renamed as G. M. C. Balayogi SATS Indoor Stadium after the Indian lawyer and politician Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi. It is situated beside the Hyderabad International Institute of Information Technology.

 

This indoor stadium is owned by the Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS). The overall central indoor playing area measures about 60m x 40m with one basketball court and six badminton courts. The stadium hosts many sporting events that include kabaddi, judo, boxing, weight lifting, table tennis, wrestling and taekwondo. The stadium’s design is built in such a way that spectators access is segregated from the access of sport-persons and officials. At the four cardinal points, there are 4 large pedestrian bridges that help the spectators to directly enter the stands at the upper level.

To conduct sports events, the indoor stadium is equipped with many facilities such as centralized heating system for water, facilities for steam & sauna, public address system, medical & dope test rooms, change rooms & toilets for players, scoreboard control, judges & referees room, lounges and pantry rooms. For safety, there are fire detection & protection systems. The indoor stadium is the home arena to the United Basketball Alliance (UBA) – India’s prime basketball league. It is also abuzz with other leagues such as Premier Badminton League and Pro Kabaddi League every year.

• World Junior Table Tennis Championships in 2012.
• The 3^rd edition of TEDx was conducted in 2017.
