India is the land of festivals and there is no denial in that. One of the significant festivals celebrated amongst them is Sankranti, also called Makar Sankranti, usually celebrated in the mid of January which marks the beginning of the harvesting season in the country. Hyderabad is getting ready to host its popular annual event, the International Kite and Sweet Festival that coincides with the 3-day Sankranti festival at Parade Grounds. The International Kite festival of Hyderabad is organized by the state Tourism and Cultural departments, where national and international kite flyers are invited from across the globe.

International Kite Festival Hyderabad

The International Kite Festival reflects the rich tapestry of kites, culture, and craft that Hyderabad is known for. The festival aims to educate and entertain through a series of kite-flying lessons, kite-making workshops, and kite-fighting competitions. This tradition from Gujarat is called Uttarayan and Pongal in the South. There are big kites designed in Germany, Scotland, USA, UK, and Bali.

As it is a sweet festival too, about 1,000 varieties of sweets and snacks will be prepared and displayed during the festival by homemakers hailing from Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, apart from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Food courts with Telangana cuisine and stalls showcasing handloom and handicrafts are also observed.

Around 10-15 lakh visitors are expected every year at the Hyderabad International Kite festival. Everyone is requested to make the festival eco-friendly by using cloth bags and reduce plastic waste.
