Chilkur Balaji Temple is one of the oldest temples located in the sacred village of Chilkur, which is 30 km away from Hyderabad. It is popularly known as “Visa Balaji Temple” and sits on the banks of Osman Sagar Lake close to the Vikarabad road. This temple attracts a large number of devotees, that is around 75,000 to 1,00,000 visit every week from all over the country. Set in sylvan surroundings, the style and structure infer that the temple was built almost 500 years ago during the times of Akkanna and Madanna (the uncles of Bhakta Ramdas). The temple is seen as an alternative to Tirumala temple.

The presiding main deity of the temple is Lord Balaji Venkateshwara along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi. According to different ancient tales and various beliefs, this temple was constructed by a devotee who visited Tirumala temple every without fail. However, owing to some serious illness he could not do so on a single occasion. Moved by his devotion, Lord Venkateshwara appeared in his dream and directed him to find his idol at this place together with Sridevi and Bhoodevi. The devotee later found the idols for real, installed them with due rituals and built a temple.

Devotees, during their visit to the temple, offer usual rituals but the unusual 11 circumambulations of the inner shrine (indicates the secret of creation) are followed by making a vow. Once the wish or vow of a person is fulfilled they take 108 pradakshanas around the sanctum sanctorum to show their gratitude towards the Lord Balaji. The pradakshanas are performed amid chanting of mantras and religious talks of the priests. In the 11 circumambulations, 11 means “1 soul and 1 body”; and in the 108  pradakshanas, 1 represents the Existence, Almighty, God, 0 represents Creation, and 8 represents 8 months – the time taken by a human body takes to come into this universe.
